About

AVATAR-m is a UK research project which will demonstrate new technologies for long term storage & online access to Petabytes of A/V content. With applications in production, archiving & preservation, we target security, scalability and most of all data integrity. Our servive oreintated architecture transparently combines local disk & legacy systems with cloud services.

The project is part funded by the UK government’s Technology Strategy Board and is managed and executed by a consortium comprising Xyratex, the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics, IT Innovations at the University of Southampton, Ovation Data Services and BBC Research & Development.

AVATAR-m was initially launched as two seperate but related projects- Avatar and Estastar- looking at the management and infrastructure layers of storage respectively.  Merged since May of 2008, the project concludes in Febriary of 2010, by which time we plan to have demonstrated new technological advances in key areas.

AVATAR-m’s technolgies, its processes, software and hardware, are all completing their research phase this year.  If you would like to explore the possibilities of turning these exciting developments into systems or services for yourself or your customers do contact us.  We have the potential to save the future of archives; you have the  opportunity to join us.

This section details upcoming events, recent events, project announcements and publicly available information releases from the Avatar-M project.

Avatar-M undergoes further trials

After continued research and development, the Avatar-M project has started another series of trials for end-user scenarios.

The intention of these trials is to test the technologies within the project against the needs of end-users.

Should you have an interest in participating in these trials, please send an e-mail enquiry along with your contact details to enquiries@avatar-m.org.uk
